The Westcott Theater Redesign

Posted Feb 7, 2010. Filed under Showcase.

The Westcott Theater is a theater and performing arts center in Syracuse, NY. In 2008 the theater was transformed from a movie cinema into a premiere live music venue. After almost two years of operation the theater boasts an impressive lineup of national, regional and local acts ... and the web traffic that goes along with it.

We were involved in the development and coding of the first version of the website, which worked perfectly well for the theater at the time. Now, the website has grown into one of their main advertising and revenue streams and we took on the challenge of both the redesign and development.

The primary goal of the site is to inform users about the upcoming shows and ultimately sell them a ticket. So with this in mind we took a close look at how the information was arranged for the upcoming shows on the home page. We made several adjustments including:

  • Much larger font size for the headlining artists
  • Clicking an artist name will bring up their profile/bio
  • Grouping date/time information together
  • Alternating background colors for clear separation of shows
  • Bright yellow "Buy Tickets" button to attract attention

Among the adjustments to the shows we also made many additions to the site including:

  • Integrated Flickr photos
  • Recent tweets from Twitter
  • Featured artist bio
  • Room for sponsor information
